The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) mobilised a protest on 20 March 2023 to demand electricity and to call for the resignation of the current President of South Africa. They called this protest a “National Shutdown” with the hopes that all South Africans would get behind their cause to remove President Ramaphosa, just like South Africans did in 2017 when they banded together for the removal of former President, Jacob Zuma. As they approached the date of their protest the narrative of the EFF became more militant. In this report, we take a deeper look at how and when the narrative shifted and try show where the conversation was focussed to understand the political opportunism at play as we head toward the 2024 elections.
